Las Cruces Native and Former NFL Draft Pick Competes at USATF Masters National Championships — Currently 1st in Nation, 2nd in World for Men 45–49 100 Meter Dash
Las Cruces, NM — Twenty-three years after being drafted by the Oakland Raiders and proudly representing the city of Las Cruces, Professor Siddeeq Shabazz is doing it again, this time as a Masters Track and Field athlete competing on the world stage in the 45–49 age group.
Last year, the Raiders organization identified a concerning heart condition in Shabazz during a health evaluation. In November, he underwent stem cell treatment. Through it all he's continued his commitment to the community, recently hosting a free football camp for high school students in his hometown of Chaparral.
Amongst all the physical challenges he faced last year, he registered for his first indoor competition on the last day of registration and won nationals his first time ever racing at 60 meters. With a short turnaround and limited conditioning time, Shabazz competed outdoors and currently stands at 1st in the nation, 2nd in the world in the 100m, and 2nd in the nation and 5th in the world in the 200m.
Shabazz serves as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at New Mexico State University's College of Business and is currently seeking sponsors and social media partners who want to be part of a story still being written.
